Async is a writing culture wearing a scheduling trick
Timezone spread is only a problem for teams that transmit decisions verbally. Once context lives in written briefs, recorded demos and decision logs, the eight-hour gap becomes a relay: work hands off at the end of one day and is further along by the next morning.
The discipline is defaulting to async and reserving overlap hours for what genuinely needs a pulse, kickoffs, hard trade-offs, retros. A meeting that could have been a document costs three timezones their best focus block.
Two habits carry most of the weight: every thread states its deadline and its decider, and every day ends with a short written handoff. Neither takes ten minutes, and together they delete the 'waiting for the other office to wake up' tax.
